Small talk is a topic everyone can talk about regardless of their background or education. Everybody can talk about the weather and complain how it’s too warm now that it’s summer. If a 2x4 could squeak out “mhmm” you could have the same conversation. The point becomes it acts as a time kill while waiting, and you don’t need to uncomfortably disappear into your phone you can acknowledge the other person, by making small talk, and seeming a little warmer than feeling like your ignoring them!

i think usually small talk is just defined as something surface-level/not super detailed or personal. all the things you mentioned are common topics for small-talk but if you talk about them more in depth or for a long time then they can also just be normal convo topics
