and, it’s LITERALLY a disability. disabilities are not just physical, not just visible.

THANK YOU!! and this whole thing is based in internalized ableism where people act like being disabled would be the end of the world. It’s so deeply insulting to the rest of the disabled community

Similar thing with ADHD too, I have both and have been told “there’s nothing wrong with you, you don’t have a disability just because your brain doesn’t work right” so many times by teachers over the years

it’s only disabling because of this society that was built. hence why any differences from the standard is considered a disability

definitely agree! autism is largely physical though! its main cause is the lack (or reduction) of a neurological process called “pruning”. this is where relatively unused synapses are essentially deleted. without this comes the benefit that it’s faster to grow away from one neural path to another (learn), but its crippling because of how much information is present at once through all steps of the cognitive process. too many options are present for every thought even if one path is strongest

i like to think of this in terms of a stream of water. initially, it might flow with small paths all over the place. in nt people, these erode, converging into a much simpler, optimal path of flow. in autistic people, these smaller paths never completely disappear, allowing stimuli to flow into other areas of the brain. this is why you may understand that someone’s being sarcastic, but the possibility that they’re not is still an option, causing doubt and a need for clarification.

so basically, autistic people naturally map more things out, leading to “pattern recognition”. i think it’s more accurate to call it “micro pattern recognition” because neurotypical people still recognize patterns. they just do it at a much larger scale and lower frequency than autistic people do. (also this is just an info dump bc this is my current hyperfixation. i love what you had to say. this is not me disagreeing:))
