The dsm-4 updated it from MPD to DID in 1994 but they have both historically been used to refer to the same diagnosis. MPD is truly a misnomer but not “entirely” wrong. Then 2013 dsm-5 updated the language for it.

No literally. And some people dont even have DID its DDNOS would b the outdated label to OSDD. I think if ppl use it on themselves thats great but respect the label for others man (not at you)

It is considered pretty offensive and outdated for some people to be completely fair but yeah i get it

That’s sort of close but not exactly. A lot of people with OSDD were diagnosed with DDNOS but it was also the diagnosis given to people who had all the symptoms of DID but the doctor doing the diagnosis didn’t witness a switch (which used to be part of DID’s diagnostic criteria). It’s not anymore, so a lot of people who were diagnosed with DDNOS had their diagnosises updated to DID

the language was updated because “multiple personalities” is an incorrect description of the disorder; “alters” are fragmented parts of a single identity that develop separately. as a child, everyone has a bunch of ego states which is why kids can flip moods so quickly, but at about 10 or so it develops into a single solid identity and sense of self, while with DID+

+repeated childhood trauma causes those ego states to be more useful separately and the child develops amnesia barriers between them, so they never come together into a single solid identity but rather separate pieces of that identity that develop differently according to what they need to get through the trauma. so “multiple personalities” is incorrect based on our current understanding, originally it seemed like personalities but we know more about it now +

Right but have you ever heard the saying “dont attribute to malice what can be explained by stupidity”

+ so “dissociative identity disorder” is more accurate to what it actually is. multiple personalities can also come with the connotation that alters are entirely separate individuals and while they can have different pronouns, personalities, interests, memories, etc. they’re just separate pieces of an identity, not their own unique people sharing a body, which is still a pretty common misconception

Right but my point is, unless you have a dsm on hand you arent going to know that the diagnosis criteria and information is different. Unless you look.

The point of my comment wasnt to defend the other person but to explain their reasoning. “Im upset about this misconception” *doesnt correct it* “No one knows shit!!”

i send 3 paragraphs explaining what DID is, why they changed the name, and didn’t complain at all in there? you’re just starting fights for no reason at this point. i hope your day goes better if something is bothering you but the only thing i complained about is you continuing to jump in to give your two cents before i was even done and picking a fight when i very much wasn’t.

like genuinely i don’t know what your problem is because at no point in the original messages did i ever come at you or even imply you were wrong because you aren’t, i was just explaining why that happened, and you kept jumping in to bitch at me and pick a fight. you keep complaining about “no one is educating” but then when i did (which you ignored) all you did was bitch at me for it.

I don’t have DID but I’ve spent years learning about it and I absolutely cannot stand the way it’s portrayed in media, movies, video games, etc. It’s so harmful to ALWAYS portray the condition as if it’s common for alters to be “murderous” and “dangerous”. And then people act like I’M the weird one for calling it out and being upset on behalf of y’all. I’m so sorry society doesn’t understand y’all but you are loved and VALID.

right like my brother in christ i’m constantly forgetting people and things and i’ve lost entire months of memories just because of a disorder, it causes a lot of friction in my relationships, and it’s a disorder caused by trauma and related to c-ptsd. also when emotional amnesia collects up and i get hit by everything that’s built up on a random tuesday. but yeah. friends in my head disorder. sure.
