out of curiosity are you thinking of any specific drugs or just in general? this isn't a topic I know anything about but it seems super interesting!! like I know a lot of people who smoke to help with their anxiety or I've heard other people with adhd saying being high helps them focus (personally it just makes me feel bad but I think I have too high of a tolerance so I have take more than my body can healthily withstand to get high)
So far from some research I did while in a manic state was that people who do drugs while bipolar actually do it because it mimics some of the missing neurotransmitters that they are missing in their brain. I can’t say this is a complete fact but it does spark some interest in my head
There’s this fantastic Peter watts book, blindsight, which is set in the nearish future (few hundred years from now I think?) and touches on this. On that society they’ve long ago stopped legally punishing drug users (as well as most criminals) as it is understood that drug use and crime have almost nothing to do with individual morality and everything to do with biology and uncontrollable circumstance. Always thought that was a fascinating idea and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s where the
Honestly I’ve had this specific interest in bipolar disorder and cigarettes. I’ve done some research on it and have noticed some connections but I can’t exactly explain it clearly. I have read a lot of things as a kid and seen lots of real people interact with substances. I hope to attract more interest from other neurodivergent people out there so that I can find more resources and hopefully publish a paper one day
As someone who is diagnosed with adhd I have thought about looking into this as well. I feel like there is something in this habit that can be explained but I just don’t know what. I know from experience that stimulants are extremely useful in helping me focus so maybe there is a reason why those diagnosed have a higher usage of stimulants. I just can’t find it yet
I think it’s just self medicating esp if you’re undiagnosed. Before I was diagnosed I would drink close to 500mg of caffeine every day. Thats not the same as being addicted to harder drugs but people who want to be able to function end up finding something that makes them feel better, maybe even hyper-productive, and once you know it’s possible to feel that way it’s hard to quit the thing that helps.
