Believe it or not, Roman legionaries only used those square shields and tiny short swords for about 200 years. For a considerably longer span of Roman military history, Roman legionnaires looked like this. (Circular shield, longer sword, etc.)

If you’re wondering why that changed, the iconic Roman kit was great for fighting Celts and Germans, but not at all good for fighting Persia.
