Explanations≠excuse. I’ve been shitty to people, so I make amends when possible and try to address the issue so it doesn’t happen or is at least mitigated if it does happen again and keep trying.

that one commenter is being obtuse but i do agree that people take the sentiment too far. autism may not be an excuse, but sometimes it means i genuinely don’t understand why something i did/said counts as “being an asshole”. and people refuse to acknowledge that

Another controversial thing is people w/mental illness that use it as an excuse to be mean to people. It’s not a fuckin excuse we get it shit is harder for you but you still can be nice and decent and not a cunt or rude like wtf

Exactly. i think the one of best ways to know if someone is actually just an asshole or not is seeing their reaction to being told they came off as rude. most autistic people i know will apologize and/or express that they weren't meaning to be rude and try and learn what about it came off as such to avoid it in the future, but the people that just brush it off and use autism as an excuse are just assholes
