can be both. i struggle with remembering to ask people questions, and usually flow better in a dynamic where we each tell stories to relate to the other. maybe try giving your own thoughts unprompted, see how he reacts. if he ignores your ideas or finds his way back to his own interests, he’s probably just hella selfish. but also, even if he’s not, it’s a fair turn-off imo
