there’s not really an exact definition but it’s usually categorized by the length of time of your interest (years, months, etc) and how often you engage with it

for me it’s the intensity of how into it i am. i know i’m hyperfixating when im thinking about it often, drawing it, attempting to connect with it in my daily life (i once applied for a job bc i was so deep into a fixation. thank god i didn’t take it lol)

I had a hyerfixation on sulfanilamide in middle and high school. Anytime there was even a sliver of a way to connect something to sulfanilamide I did. Similarly, my boyfriend’s special interest is trains/public transit. When I ask him for advice he will use train metaphors and analogies. The gifts he gets me are things I like, but also related to trains. Its just how he thinks
