I do seek to nominate DID to this list too, but this is a very very good take. I firmly believe the last bastion of reactionary thought in the world will be the thought that those with mental illnesses and disabilities, especially chronic ones like personality and dissociative disorders, are inherently lesser than “normal people”. That’ll be the last fight we have to win to be in a good world. If you can’t defend or understand a psychopath or a system, you need to reevaluate yourself
people think certain disorders are evil when the medical system fails so many people with those disorders, which of course leads to them being shitty or horrible people. obviously they have SOME agency, but we don’t blame people with untreated depression for harming themselves when it’s a direct result of their symptoms
The line for blame to me lies where yourself ends and someone else begins. You do have to accept blame and you are at fault for hurting others, even if it’s a symptom of your illness. Whether the fault is as basic as you harmed someone due to your illness, or you failed to seek medical treatment to lessen those drives that caused harm, etc. Fault and blame don’t have to be an all encompassing negative things though either. You’re not evil for being at blame bc of an illness
what “accepting fault” means will be different for each person, but yes, I’m not saying they shouldn’t accept any blame, since they still did what they did. I’m mostly saying that (in most cases) accepting blame & making up for it is seeking & engaging authentically in treatment and (if possible/wanted) apologizing to those they harmed
