Can someone help me explain what to call this: Somedays I wake up or just get into these moods of silence where I don’t like to speak, like at all and it honestly feels like I have to put so much effort to talk like thinking about every word & syllable.

They don’t usually last more than half a day and don’t make me uncomfortable, I just feel bad when I have to go out in public by myself and can’t explain to people why I’m quiet.

I totally relate to this experience though, talking especially when I’m tired, just takes up so much energy and effort so I’ll just point or nod or something

You could honestly learn ASL and just use that to communicate with others when you don’t feel like talking

Yeah, I want to but don’t really know where to start, plus my family isn’t really supportive of my mute episodes, it took a lot for them to get me diagnosed on the first place, and most of it was me doing the leg work.

That’s what I do. Even just a few signs are really helpful most of the time. My friends are nice and have learned trial by fire when I stop talking. Two of them know how to finger spell so I can teach them new stuff

Are there any good apps to start learning ASL with?

I use Lingvano but I paid for a subscription bc I’m really into it so it was worth it for me. There’s also one called ASL sign language that’s blue app with hands on it and it teaches you 2 new ones every day for free (last I checked). I learn as much as I can on yt as well, esp with ASL translations of songs I like bc then it’s easy practice

The thing with this is that the other person needs to know asl too to know what ur saying most of the time. Some signs are self explanatory but a lot aren’t. However I find that most ppl are interested in learning a few bc they think it’s cool- but not a lot will go try the effort of learning that much just to talk to u unless they care abt u a lot

Plus eye contact is important for ASL which can be hard for some neurodivergent ppl. You can also write on your phone and show them if it’s a complicated sentence or ordering at a restaurant or something
