I was chatting with someone in another group, debating an engineering topic, and their replies started to look like ai. I asked if they were ai and after two denials they admitted it was. Claimed I was being ableist for criticizing this because they’re -

No… AI writing for you is not accessibility, it’s plagiarism. There are countless stories of people with varying disabilities who do great things, using them as a scapegoat for their AI usage is more ableist than anything else. They think using AI makes them sound smarter, but honestly it makes them look extremely stupid. I struggle with articulation, and I’ve done work to overcome it. Being stupid is not a disability!

Neurodivergent and claimed that they needed ai to write for them (synthesize their own thoughts they said) in the same way that an amputee would need a prosthetic. Am I being ableist? Do they have a point about having the right to pass off ai writing as their own as some form of accommodation? It just bothers me when I’m thinking I’m talking to a person and I’m just talking to them through their ai.

If it had been consistent from the start, I would say that maybe it gets a pass, but since this happened in the middle of a debate, I’m going to assume that they just clearly began to run out of points and then started referring to AI.

When my students tell me they have trouble articulating their thoughts, we do a graphic organizer. Or speech to text. Or a dialogue. Or a poster. Or an art project. Language can be communicated in so many ways, and yet people choose the one that makes you stupider. Ugh

Devils advocate here then, what’s the more correct use case? Is there any science behind using an ai to write for you as some sort of accommodation? Cause yes he switched back and forth and lied about it which was off putting, but I’m curious if there’s any kernel of truth in there.

Yeahhh that was kind of my thought too. You need a prosthetic bc your arm won’t grow back but communication skills? I just can’t imagine relying on an ai for that would do anything besides make you sound smarter in the short term (for folks who can’t pick out clearly ai text) but rob you of improvement in the long term
