My best friend, roommates, and family all use the R slur all the time. Like it’s just any other word, but it is SUPER offensive and actually makes me feel so sick. Like disabled people fought so hard for their rights, and now it’s just another adjective..

I think it’s gotten tremendously better but there are definitely still people like that out there :/ I’m sorry. Have you tried at least correcting your best friend and telling how that makes you feel? I think it would be easiest to start there, or reconsider who you call your best friend if they dismiss you

Idk. I tell people how I feel about it and they just ignore me and keep using it. Anyone relate? Or anyone disagree? I’d be interested in hearing an opposing view. I know the black people have reclaimed the n word and use it, is this similar? (Obviously racism and ableism are different, but I’m talking on a slur basis) can the r word be used casually…? And why do people feel the need to do so?

i use the r word and i reclaim it even if other ppl dont agree w that. im autistic and have been repeatedly ostracized from society and have had that word used to insult me so much growing up or just called “slow” and made fun of for being on the spectrum . i dont use it to insult people but i do use it as a descriptive term which ppl might not agree with but it makes me feel better to assign it to something that isnt myself. i dont think everyone should use that word though
