Im supposed to be asleep but out of nowhere I have this burning curiosity about how QR codes work. I cant win and I hate how the thoughts just don’t stop

You know how binary is ones and zeroes, and you can simplify those ones and zeros to black squares and white squares? Thats how every barcode, qr code, etc works. It's all binary!

It’s a good question tbh. The phone is somehow able to recognize that specific code or pattern

TLDR there’s a pattern in one corner that tells what size and form the data is, and then the rest is just binary with every other row being a placeholder.
