Can people develop selective mutism? I have severe social anxiety and it’s gotten to the point where in normal conversation with friends I start stuttering before feeling unable to talk and signaling someone else to continue conversation

This is a form of “going nonverbal” and is really common, bestie. You’re valid and understood. I don’t know the details, but something about our brain chemicals overwhelming certain centers of the brain and shutting them down, or something like that. But it’s real.

What #1 said exactly, I’ve found that it’s easier for me to deal with being nonverbal because all of my friends are on the spectrum and we all have overwhelmed days where if we aren’t talking then everyone else just either talks around them (if they are too overwhelmed to be involved at all) or waits for them to type/write out notes to give their piece

My advice: when your brain starts doing this, try to de escalate with your favorite self soothing technique. Then you can progress more easily through the difficult social situation.

Me and a couple of others also know some basic signs and will occasionally sign out parts of our conversation, or one time me and another friend completely left the other conversation and started our own teaching each other the signs we knew
