I had been assaulted as a teenager (a family member strangled me from behind) and I still have panic attacks from it. I talked about maybe if I had used the kn*fe I had on me instead of waiting for them to stop, I wondered if I’d be less traumatized. I said it bothered me how it bothers me that the people who hurt me seem to lack empathy for me and said I wish I could ‘punish them’ by making them feel guilty for it
Like, out of context, it sounds bad, I understand, but I feel like my therapist had context and overreacted by calling after the session to check in about it being concerning when there was nothing reportable from it anyway. I told her I understood at the time, but now I worry I won’t be able to be open in therapy about intense without being nervous about a repeat of it
Also, just to clarify even further like I did for the therapist, when I say ‘punish them by making them feel guilty’ I meant trauma dumping to people who have hurt me about how their actions/behaviors triggered my ptsd so then they would feel regretful (like I had a teacher criticize my panic attack after triggering a flashback, and I wish I could make her feel bad for making her classroom unsafe for students)
a therapists job is to check in on you, they are legally required to make sure you don’t hurt yourself or others. if its bothering you, you should talk about it with your therapist and get clarification on it. any therapist that doesn’t check on you after feeling even a little bit concerned is not a good therapist. the fact that they made the effort is a good sign imo
I appreciate this, but I’m extremely familiar with the process for how this process works because my mother is an LMFT and now works at a government job that reviews mental health facilities. The legal necessity is if I stated I had plans to hurt myself or another person, or mentioned ab*se of a minor or elder. I wouldn’t have minded if it was a message to check on me later, but she called me 15 mins after my session and then asked for me to call back
