DAE struggle to make friends w other autistic people? I always hear people say it’s easier but it’s the exact opposite for me. Only ever made 1 autistic friend. And I’ve tried very hard. Allistics are much easier to talk to for me for some reason

yes i find that i don’t fw other autistic ppl. our needs often contradict and some common traits really mess with my ability to communicate the way i need to

For me it depends on the person and their relationship to their special interests. I’ve met some autistic people who only want to talk about their interests and nothing else, not even for a few minutes, and if we don’t share the same interests that is difficult for me. Or if someone puts their interests above mine in every conversation I start to feel like we’re not friends but I’m just someone they’re using to info dump to. No disrespect to those folks, I get it, I just need smth else yk?

I'm autistic and autistic or not, I get along best with people who have ADHD.

I get that! To me (also have ADHD) since there’s inattentive, hyperactive, combined, ADHD doesn’t guarantee someone has a specific personality type? Of course there’s the shared symptoms, though, so I get how it could help

definitely, but I think people with ADHD are either less likely to notice/more likely to forgive when I forget to reciprocate questions

Ohhh, gotcha! That makes sense. That’s actually my main problem with making autistic friends 😅 is that a lot of the time they don’t ask questions back, and I don’t feel comfortable interrupting to randomly talk about myself, so it just turns into an interview basically. It’s for sure on me too, bc I’m also the problem for not being comfortable talking unprompted and only wanting to ask each other questions

This is so real. I don’t like talking about myself without permission from the other party, otherwise I feel invasive. It can be exhausting doing all the questions in a conversation

1000%! I couldn’t have put this better myself. I hate the feeling of getting talked *at* instead of talked *with.*

I also bond best with people by partaking in their interests (listening to music they like, watching media they enjoy, trying out hobbies, etc) but very rarely do my autistic friends ask to try out my interests and it ends up bumming me out

Yess, like I’ll go out of my way to watch a movie if I know my friend loves it, and while I’m watching I’ll try to think about why they specifically love it and how it relates to them- but I don’t feel like anyone ever does this back, especially my autistic friends :/ (though also allistic friends of course)
