having an official diagnosis is really nice as well!! as someone who is very good at masking just being able to officially say yes i know i have this even if i dont “look like im autistic” really helps my day to day life

a formal diagnosis will allow you to protect yourself from discrimination under the ADA. companies and people cannot legally discriminate against you based on your neurodivergence. as horrible as it is people are not very nice to people with adhd and autism and just having that diagnosis can really help protect yourself on a legal standpoint.

I’m formally diagnosed with both and I recommend pursuing an ADHD diagnosis but not pursuing an autism diagnosis. Being formally diagnosed with adhd gets you access to meds, and being diagnosed with either will get you accommodations. Being additionally diagnosed with autism doesn’t open any new doors for meds, therapies, or accommodations but it means there’s certain countries you can’t move to bcos ur considered a ‘medical burden’. Aside from the negatives, it’s not really worth the money.

medication and accomodations. however you will be discriminated against in the work force and have people treat you differently so i personally wouldnt recommend diagnosis if you can function fairly well

ADHD diagnosis is worth it for meds and accommodations in school but to me an autism diagnosis simply isn’t worth it - it can even restrict you from doing things like getting a visa to New Zealand

they still do discriminate lol they just give some bs reason. you can see it easily during the hiring process if you say no when they ask you vs if you say yes

yeah i know they still discriminate that’s the reason i would recommend getting the diagnosis. it won’t stop it but it will help if you come to a situation where you want to pursue something legally with these people who discriminated against you. already having the diagnosis and informing them about your diagnosis and them continue to discriminate can be grounds to sue. as shitty as it is people with disabilities, like myself, have to protect and advocate for ourselves because others will not.

no i get that im just saying that even though it helps legally its hard to prove that its actually discrimination. some employers are definitely stupid and will just outright discriminate but most bigger companies will generally use some other reason. luckily the stigma against mental health is starting to change anyways so it shouldnt be an issue for much longer
