“You need to stop eating this unhealthy processed foods.” I don’t think my mother understands that I can’t just “change” what my only safe foods are. As much as I wish I could eat like every neurotypical person, I can’t.

I’ve found recipe books that are like high protein homemade alternatives to my safe foods. Getting my macros a little better, was a bit of a transition because they do taste a little different, but honestly being able to control the seasoning amounts of my own homemade chicken nuggets was huge

If you really want to eat healthier then you need to throw out the mindset that you already know everything you like. You have to try new things. Imagine it as a fun adventure instead of something scary

Sometimes with autism people have food intake disorders and it can be way more difficult than a fun adventure, it can be something that sometimes you might need help for. For example, ARFID - avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder or other disorders or comorbidites with autism

No I am aware of that. I'm saying if you convince yourself that you'll hate every food you try, it'll make it worse. Breaking out of that thought pattern is the key to breaking out of bad eating habits in general

It’s not a mentality thing. I have sensory issues. I love the taste of corn, but I gag anytime I have to eat it. I have very few foods that don’t cause any issues. Let me tell you, I wish I could eat corn like every other person and not literally vomit due to the texture (because I love the taste and many typical corn dishes), but I can’t. So being told I need to stop eating some of the only foods I can eat without gaging or vomiting because they happen to be processed is not helpful.

it’s not convincing yourself you’ll hate every food. it’s fear of how your body will react if the texture is off or if the taste isn’t right.
