Why the hell does “I’m sorry” have to simultaneously mean that you’re apologizing AND act as an expression of sympathy depending on the context

There are some contexts where it’s obvious which one was intended, but there are other contexts where I’ve regularly had to clarify what I meant or ask for clarification if someone else said it

It definitely helps to say “I’m sorry you’re going through this” or “I’m sorry to hear that” instead of just “I’m sorry” to express sympathy…I think I’ve been socialized to apologize out of sympathy, and that often creates confusion because I often get the response “it’s not your fault” or “you don’t need to apologize” 😭

no fr like i feel like saying “im sorry” after someone died or somethibg is like horrible. like idk it just doesnt make sense in my head and also i wouldnt wanna be told that either. like idk but i also find myself sayibg it bc idk what else to say lol
