That was my second head coach in high school. He had a lot of success from having some great all around athletes at his old job but he didnt know how to handle not having automatic superstars. My first head coach had great ball knowledge but no people skills, and thats why we were so bad with him was because he didnt care about the personal side of it
I had a lot of knowledgeable former D1 players when I was younger but unfortunately had complete morons in High school. They would genuinely get upset if anyone suggested a new play to add to the playbook or suggest any type of adjustment…the only years we were good was when we had a stacked team bc it’d just be the players making plays despite the poor play calling.
Whats fucked up is my second head coach who was lucky to have certain people was a former D1 player who shouldve been better at working with who he had. I’ll give him credit for working in more tight end stuff my senior year because we had 2 very good very big tight ends but other than that he expected us all to fit into a very tight mold that we couldntve fit without a lot more coaching than they had time to give us
That and his playcalling has always been either way too conservative or terribly timed, and it cost us games while I was there and after I graduated. “But a good coach develops his players how they’ll succeed the most” Yes you develop your players in practice but in games you get what they can already give. A good coach also recognizes the skills their players have and build them. They also dont put their players in situations where they’re not as likely to succeed based on their skill set.
