Calvin Ridley is making $23M/year. I’d rather have Gibbs

Not when the lions are nowhere near being a SB contender

So if you’re not actively contending for a Super Bowl (which I’m not so sure I agree with) the best way to move forward is to let your best players walk for free?

If you aren’t close to contending with Gibbs on a cheap deal, why would you get better by paying him top of the market?

Why would you get better by letting him go somewhere else?

By spending money on other positions of need instead of a RB, probably

You think elite players grow on trees? They let him walk, they just find a better cheaper option right away?

Yeah; they did it before, they can do it again

Everybody said they were dumb for drafting Gibbs and signing Monty when they already had a good RB Duo in Swift and Jamaal Williams. Why can’t they replicate something similar in the post Gibbs and Monty era?

Everybody saying it was dumb means nothing. But yea maybe they go out and spend that first round pick on a RB who turns out to be as good as Gibbs. Personally I’d rather spend that premium pick on the best pass rusher or OL you can get and pair him with Gibbs

The whole point of drafting is to get the best players you can, and retain them as long as you can. There aren’t many successful teams that draft great players just to get rid of them. And if you are going to move them, at least get a buttload of picks

And to your presumption that they’re not close to contending, I disagree. They have arguably the most talented offense in the NFL, an elite pass rusher, 2 great safeties, an all pro linebacker, a great GM and HC, a decent QB. They only lost their division by 2 games. They’re really not far off if they can stay healthy and improve at OC/DC

Both of those great safeties are likely never playing again (for the lions) due to injury. Their defense has been god awful for years and is only decent when healthy (which they never are). And who’s to say they’ll be better next year? If anything, they overachieved this year by going 9-8. They could have easily finished 6-11

Joesph just signed an extension through 2029 and he’s only 25. Branch is 24 and will play at some point next season

But no I absolutely believe they underachieved relative to their talent and HC. They’re getting new coordinators that they brought in from outside, that should help. I’m not going to sit here and predict injuries, any team can get cluster injuries on any given year
