Sometimes I’m just existing and remember that Sam Darnold was chosen 29 picks before Lamar

Back when NFL front offices were still openly racist.

Darnold was far and away the better prospect. The ravens franchise took a shot on Lamar and then played to his strengths until he became the extreme talent that he is now

Darnold was not that great of a prospect and Lamar fell bc a lot of teams wanted him to play WR/RB despite him developing a lot as a passer in college and bc he wouldn’t switch a lot of teams weren’t going to draft him in the 1st round.

This is hindsight bias at play. Lamar’s physical gifts and instincts were obvious but he wasn’t on the level of a 1st round qb prospect when it comes to passing and making reads. We saw that continue through his first MVP season when defenses knew they could shut him down by forcing him to be a pure passer. That’s when Big Ben said that you don’t fear Lamar Jackson picking you apart from the pocket. He’s obviously developed into a good passer but he just wasn’t there in college and Darnold was

much better at it. He had a rocket arm, good size, played at a school with a good track record for QBs, had the necessary athleticism to pick up a first down, and while he obviously wasn’t good enough to stay a starter in the nfl from the jump we’re talking about “prospects” and that includes what you project the qb to be. Most teams projected Lamar to be a bad qb and Darnold to continue to grow and become a franchise qb

Darnold has an avg QB arm not a rocket, Darnold has below avg NFL athleticism, Darnold also struggled with deep balls in college but other than that he was a safe pick for a QB. Not a crazy upside but a high floor as he was someone that teams expected to be able to make reads and keep the ball safe. Lamar proved in college that he was developing as a passer and the majority of QBs aren’t pro ready coming out of college as a lot of colleges run QB friendly schemes.

Mahomes was sat his first year bc he struggled with accuracy and couldn’t read a defense, that doesn’t mean the Chiefs shouldn’t have drafted him with a top pick in the draft. Same thing with Josh Allen.

I don’t like playing it but it’s true, Lamar proved he was a QB in college yet NFL front offices wanted him to switch to a position he’s never played before. You’re naive if you think otherwise…they used Gruden to take down one of the owners and exposed his racist emails, do you really think he’s the only one in the league that sent emails like that?
