It's best out of 7 games for every round of the playoffs, so the first team to 4 wins will get the cup. Games 5-7 are marked as "if necessary" because if one team wins games 1-4 with no losses (or plays games 1-5 with 1 loss or 1-6 with 2 losses) they win the cup, the postseason is over, and the remaining games are cancelled

A post season series is normal in most sports so 1 fluke win doesn’t determine anything, a best of 7 gives the clear distinction of who the better team is. Game 1 isn’t everything, also means more action so huge bonus there

Im also kinda new to hockey so it took me a min to understand it too but i much prefer a game series to just one game that determines the winner cuz I dont think just one game is enough to say one team is better than another!!

For example, last year’s final was between the Panthers and Oilers. The Oilers won game 1, Panthers won games 2 and 3, Oilers won game 4, and the Panthers won games 5 and 6, bringing them to 4 wins in the finals, so game 7 wasn’t played

It’s first to win 4 games, so if you win the first 4, there’s no point to play 5,6,7
