As a southerner who loves the fancy vibe of "sir" and "m'am" but doesnt like how it excludes nonbinary friends, we need a queer version! Taking any and all suggestions in the comments

"neighbor" is a nice one even if you're a don't live close, just implies community

I love the southern style of speaking too but it’s just- so gendered? I can try. We can’t mix them because Sam is a name and Mir sounds like mermaids. I know Mx is the Mrs/Mr version, but how do you lengthen that. I just feel like the x sound lacks the southern sound…

For yes specifically, I’ve always heard yessum. Yes sir, yes ma’am, yessum.

Some here have proposed Sam but may I propose ma’r? Pronounced like a female horse “Your honor” or “my liege” always works

Let me do some research into the origins of sir and ma’am and see if I can make a few good enbie alternatives

Turns out this task is borderline impossible without fabricating an entire new word which I admit I have no idea how to do. The words sir and ma’am come from such gendered roots- it’s not possible. I recommend just saying Friend or Pal, or just saying which they’d prefer, sir or ma’am. Sorry, OP

Another alternative, at risk of sounding British: https://youtube.com/shorts/Af-q4Ex90Dc?si=Jrj9LSZ-SZ2fedYF

This is exactly the problem, the old white men around here will attack on sight for even implying they could be a commie
