I fear I’m in enemy territory… (I’ve loved Taylor sense 2020 and sense Olivia 2021💔)

so i’m a big fan of both of them & i’ve been studying voice & performing my whole life. from a technical perspective, olivia does in fact have more range, power, pitch control and breath control & a warmer timbre to her voice. timbre is more of a taste thing, but all of the other quals do objectively make her a technically better singer. whether you personally like her voice better or not is another thing. but from a technical perspective, OR has the superior voice now & compared to TS at 22

as to the points on OR’s lyrics, she & TS are going after two completely different things. TS was more after the subtle, poetic, flowery, literary language. OR was going for edgy, raw, unfiltered, conversational lyrics. apples & oranges. i’ll say too though if you listen to a lot of TS today, you can hear how OR & other singers like Lorde have influenced TS’ songwriting & production. she’s become more simple, raw and edgy herself.

I mean at Olivia’s age Taylor had already written 4 albums, all of which had better lyrics than Olivia’s 2.

She phones it in way too much. Like “You got me fucked up in the head, boy. Never doubted myself so much”. No nuance at all. It would hardly be worse if she had sang “the guy I’m dating makes me feel really bad about myself sometimes” because that is almost what she actually wrote.

I’m reading through Sour’s lyrics right now. I don’t even get the impression I’m reading poetry. It just reads like a boring girl’s diary. Taylor was able to be poetic AND relatable and before she turned 18.

And Taylor had plenty of nuance from age 15 on. Her lyrics overflowed with imagery from the very beginning and with some pretty good metaphors too. The entire chorus of Our Song compares music to the sounds of a relationship, praying that God will let the relationship continue by “playing it again”. The “strike a match on all my wasted time” uses the burning of photos both literally and to symbolize getting over the relationship.

I’m not saying those lines are Sylvia Plath but that’s the point - Olivia can’t even clear that low bar. If she wrote that line they’d be something like this: “I deleted all your photos today. I’m so over you.”

It’s a step above her diary stuff despite being a little clunky. “You treating me badly was so CRIMINAL.” The only cringe part of our song is the guy driving around with his hand on her “heart”. Taylor is way better at production considering she actually gets credited as a producer and Olivia doesn’t. Neither of their voices are anything special.
