Hawthorne’s ancestor, John Hathorne, was one of the judges at the Salem Trials. John’s father William Hathorne was also a magistrate known for being overly harsh towards Quakers. It’s believed that Nathaniel Hawthorne added the w in his last name to separate himself from that part of his family history.
