This is layered racism. The fact they chose apes- a common racist association white people have compared black people to- and adopted black American cultured fashion as well. Like clearly dudes to the left side is wearing an orange durag for example which protects black peoples hair

U seeing a gold chain and sagging and choosing to associate it with a specific demographic is racist not the design itself so it’s actually u that’s racist

how come it’s the stereotypical black accessories that are on the monkeys (gold chain, durag, sagging pants, etc.) one of them even has 4c hair 🧍‍♀️ the design is definitely racist

Also to the people saying its not and *i’m* the one being racist, the boss battle literally takes place in a basketball arena, and there is spray paint graffiti that says “gangs” and “we not monkeys” 💀

I’d say there is a difference between depicting black people as apes and depicting apes as black people. This is clearly a world where anthropomorphic animals exist and choosing to represents black stereotypes through the ape characters isn’t inherently bad if it was done with the proper intentions of representation rather than mockery. Sometimes satirizing stereotypes is a good way to address them (do the right thing, by spike lee for example) but I’m not sure this is one of those examples

You’re the racist one for associating certain animals, clothing, or behavior to certain demographics. All I see are animals that dress weird. What is this, a video game?

While I agree, it’s still likely that the designers chose those elements specifically to convey a specific demographic, and thus, also racist

yea ngl im my opinion this racist, paints that specific demographic by using common stereotypes (hence the primates , gold chains, and a basketball court seriously? )i’m black but cmon😂

exactly, and i’m assuming that’s a fox on the right but he’s not wearing any gold chains or rings and his pants are pulled up, while the one with the orange durag is sagging 🙄, they’re making it obvious 😂

yea it’s a “gangster gorilla” but there are underlying stereotypes within this graphic that forms this into a racial remark

Bro come on they’ve got a du-rag and an Afro and dreads. All things that you might call a white person a cultural appropriator for having, because they are traditionally black hairstyles. Using those for character design isn’t racist of course, but associating them with a long-used stereotype of black people being apes makes it racist.

Yeah and “gangster” has pretty specific cultural connotations in the US, which includes this style of dress, so, pretty unsurprising that a “gangster gorilla” would be dressed like this.

It’s a style of dressing associated with a specific subculture of black people, associating clothing with the cultural groups that wear that clothing is recognizing basic reality, none of this “I don’t see color” nonsense. If someone assumed all black people dressed like that subculture it’d obviously be racist but erasing the cultural origins of the subculture and style is racist as well One of them is literally wearing a durag, come on now

Yeah and the cultural connotations are styles of dress by subcultures of black people because, like a lot of other cultural connotations in the US, the cultural connotation is racist. One of them is literally wearing a durag and the match was in a basketball court, it’s obvious the stereotypes they were going for here
