I think I would replace them with something smaller , maybe even unnoticeable to the untrained eye/couldn’t be seen until uncovered, like the small headstones that are full on stone in the ground yknow. Or bury their fav toy/bone before leaving idk. If I didn’t replace them I’d leave them because idk, it feels like a seal to me
