This is inspired by a reel by ramsesthepigeon that goes over the meaning of each option and historical “correct” one

1 or 2 could be correct depending on context I think

I can absolutely see an argument for one but if this were being taught as a grammatical example it would be two because it seperates the action of the first noun from the noun(s) being acted upon and also serves as an explanatory comma (the book, Lord of the flies, ... / rest ye, merry gentlemen, ...)

But why could it not be a command?

It can be but if it were there would be no need for a comma at all, one would technically be viable in that case but its an unnecessary comma, as I said, I see an argument for one, its just not how it would be taught

I’m sorry but saying “Bob pick that up” is definitely not correct

It wouldnt be, because that command is structured differently, im confused on why youre arguing I literally agreed with you 😭

Ok I’m confused too now, how are they structured differently?

Commands between two people (yes the plural non-proper gentlemen count) are treated differently than commands between people and objects the same way verbs can be treated differently based on their placement

Oh I was imagining that I would be speaking to god when I say that though

Yes but god is a person and so are the gentlemen vs bob is a person and 'that' is not theyd be treated differently because the subjects fall under diff categories

The subjects are the same, the objects are changing. But that doesn’t mean anything, if I said “Bob, punch Joe” that doesn’t magically make the comma unnecessary

No bc the difference between 'that' and 'joe' is improper vs proper which is not the difference Im discussing ,I really dont know how else to explain it, option 1 of the poll is an optional comma, technically correct but the scenario would be taught as option 2 as that comma is non optional so its the only answer that isnt situational/arguable, I am agreeing with you that one is a viable grammatic response I really dont know what else you want

I want you to explain why the comma in the first one is optional

I already did multiple times, as I said I dont know how else to explain it to you and I dont understand why youre arguing bc I agreed with you in the first place anyways 💀

You’re not agreeing with me cuz I’m saying the comma isn’t optional and you’re saying it is?????
