i feel like the younger groups are more messed up because they missed social development where the older groups missed more ‘content’

The gap between current middle and highschool (covid elementary and middle) and current undergrad+ (covid hs and undergrad) is insane, not only did they miss all their social development but they missed a lot of time just experiencing life, developing sensory tolerance, and basic foundational content, your hs pre-calc can be recovered, a 2nd graders phonics, SEL, and self regulation is not as easy

I’m shocked middle schoolers have such little votes. At least elementary school is longer and they’re able to be watched enough over time by teachers when they did come back in order to have them catch up. With middle schoolers, they barely got to experience any of middle school before being tossed into high school where things ramp up significantly with applying to colleges and needing to be active in volunteering while keeping up academically

I feel like kids that were in high school at any point of 2020 turned out decently alright tho, it’s the kids after that that were messed up the worst

As someone in high school when covid happened, they were so lenient that I wasn’t even required to take the SAT’s for college. I doubt the middle school covid kids were given the same opportunity even though they were likely very stunted during the period where they should start grasping harder concepts and having more team building skills that you’ll need in high school

Middle school really is a sweet spot for exactly that reason, theyre old enough where online school should be managable and not so old where their opportunities for application/resume development were limited, they got all the foundational education of elementary so their only real lack was social development, the brain changes too much in elementary ages so 'catching up' isnt really possible, it can be met in the middle educationally but as your brain changes it closes a lot of doors

In terms of the hs 'benefits' of leniency a lot of high schools have drastically lowered metrics for success to accommodate covid fall off and most colleges are still test optional so all the covid middle schoolers moving up to apply now/soon have those same 'benefits' if not more

idk i was in 7th grade when covid hit and i personally didn’t feel like it had a hugely adverse effect on my high school experience. by the time i got to high school we were fully in person (although still masking etc.) and by the end of my freshman year things were pretty much completely back to normal. i do think it would’ve been tough to be /entering/ middle school though (like in the 5th or 6th grade when covid hit)

that said i still think elementary schoolers had it significantly worse. not that all levels of schooling aren’t important but SO much mental and social development happens during the elementary years that they largely missed out on. the gap i see between my age cohort and people just a few years younger than me is insane
