The context of this photo is in WW2 (?), the army was trying to figure out where fighter planes needed to be reinforced the most. They compiled the areas where the returning planes got hit onto a diagram, which is the photo above. Most people’s gut reaction would be to reinforce the spots with the most hit areas, but you actually want to reinforce the spots with the LEAST, because these are the planes that actually made it back. Meaning they could get hit in those spots and still fly

Not accounting for the population that was eliminated and how that would affect results is survivor bias, basically.
