My roommate has a cat and her room always smells vaguely of cat poop. I’ve never lived with a cat. Is this normal?

Yes and no :/ if it’s a small space and the litter box is in the room it’s kind of unavoidable but anything else just means they aren’t cleaning up after the cat

If the litter box isn’t in the room it shouldn’t smell like shit lol cats are usually clean

Assuming your friend has a litter box in her room, politely ask her to scoop the liter daily and maybe to change the type of liter. They have really good ones that hide the smell.

Put in for a litter robot, it’s a lifesaver

Kinda, if it’s a small space and she’s cleaning the litter-box daily and routinely changing the liter, there’s not much else she can do. HOWEVER, if she isn’t doing all of that then you might wanna say something. If you can’t even clean a litter-box you shouldn’t have any kind of pet…

I can always smell if someone owns a cat but generally it shouldn't be the kind of scent you can't ignore

If it bothers you maybe you could ask her to buy scented cat litter, if the cat isn’t litter boxed trained that’s def why

It kind of depends. The room with the litter box can smell like cat poo but it shouldn’t be overbearing. I saw that you said it’s not self cleaning so yeah, there would be a slight smell. If she’s not cleaning daily that could also be a cause

And there’s self cleaning litter boxes that I’m assuming are scented that I’ve slept in the same room and not noticed any smell

It’s not a self-cleaning litterbox but it is in her room

Scented litter can cause lung issues. Those baking soda arm and hammer hangers or a litter box with a lid that has a charcoal filter insert works too.

Yeah and sometimes the mix of smells makes it SO much worse. I used those scent bead things just cause I was gifted them when I tried pretty litter cause that litter doesn’t work at covering up scent AT ALL.

Not even scented, they just immediately dump the waste into a compartment so there’s nothing to smell up the room in the first place
