I’m happy with 1-6, iffy on 7. “The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word” which I’m understanding to mean ‘when moral conviction seems to conflict with conventional wisdom, follow the conviction’ is a nice sentiment but I think people are so poor at being able to foretell the consequences of their own actions (not because they are stupid, but because we only get one perspective apiece) that following 7 consistently seems ill-advised.

Generally yes. I agree with commenter #3’s point. I also don’t necessarily align with “the freedom to offend” in cases where rhetoric validates unjustified violence or oppression. Need to account for the paradox of tolerance👍

I see the last one a little bit differently. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, but at the same time, the written and spoken word can just mean the popular opinion in society and sometimes, the popular opinion isn’t the morally correct one.

I think my issue with that defense is it uses “can”, “sometimes” to defend a position that specifically uses “always.” You can argue against an absolute with conditionals (ie, ‘All apples are red’ ‘No, some are green’) but you can’t argue for an absolute with them (‘All apples are red’ ‘Yes, some apples are red’) which is what this defense seems like.

So absolutely I agree, there are some times where following the spirit of compassion/wisdom/justice should prevail over the written/spoken word; I just can’t transfer that belief over to an absolute ‘always’ like Statement 7 uses

i think this tenant is specifically talking about someone living life the way they want to. for example if they engage in polyamory and you find that offensive for whatever reason. you shouldn’t comment on it because they have the freedom to live their life how they want, and you have that same freedom. also, validating unjust violence through words directly goes against these tenants, but i do see where you’re coming from.
