The Covid lockdowns were a great example of this. Those favoring the lockdowns wanted to slow the spread but those against the lockdowns saw that our economy and mental health were crumbling.

You need to have a bit of both. Like theoretically an authoritarian surveillance state would be the most safe, and theoretically legalizing murder would be the most free. You need to strike a balance, but I believe that an ideal society is one when freedom is given more priority.

Safety means a government like China with very strict laws and punishments that stop bad actors but loyalists and apolitical people can live a normal and fulfilling life

And still even today there are morons who can’t see that Covid was grossly overblown, overhyped, and overreacted to. Everyone should have taken whatever precautions they feel are right for themselves - anywhere from no protection at all, all the way to a full hazmat suit if you somehow thought Covid was the end of the world
