The part I don’t understand is like what actually dictates movement in the current price. Is there a central program that’s like oh we got 10 bids & 5 asks so let’s raise the price by a penny.

But generally a company will hire a third party to determine the total value of the company and then divide that value by the number of shares, and then the price that people want to buy the shares at changes based on public perception. Often times sellers will lower their shares selling prices to offload them, which drags the price down
