Cults can act like a religion and a religion can be perverted to act like a cult but they aren’t the same inherently. The cult part is just went people are trying to take advantage of others, which isn’t always the case

Cults and religions cannot inherently be distinguished from one another. The modern term cult is often distinguished based on degree of social isolation from those outside the cult (in which case religions may or may not be one) but historically when we refer to cultic sites or the cult of Mithras that’s just a religion.
