My boyfriend's mom says that if he proposes to me he has to take over all of his payments (insurance, car, etc) because she thinks it's too early. We've been dating for 1.5 years

I have to agree with your mom on this one. My fiancé and I didn’t get engaged until we’d been living together for 3 years, fully covering our own expenses. 1.5 years at 21 is pretty quick. But, if you have a years-long engagement period it’s not too big of a deal. It’s just that most people get engaged and immediately start wedding planning, and marriage is obviously a lot more difficult to get out of if things go south.
