If you're already "depressed af" like your post is saying, the first thing I'd think about critically is whether your depression will get in the way of caring for this hypothetical cat This isn't a jab or anything either, just saying you should know yourself best and consider if you're in a spot to take on the responsibility of caring for an animal in your current state
Mirroring what #1 said, seriously consider whether you’re capable of caring for a living, breathing animal right now. Cats are an enormous responsibility both physically and financially, and they cost emotional labor as well. You have to make sure their litter box is kept clean, that you brush them to prevent matting, that you stay on top of any messes they might make, and make sure you’re prepared to shell out money for vet bills.
I’m sure you’ve considered this already, but really try and consider whether that kind of responsibility would enrich your life or induce more stress. My roommate was in a similar situation, minus the depression (I think). But she’s incredibly irresponsible and can barely take care of herself. And when she got a cat, rather than rising to the occasion, she neglects it as much as she neglects herself. It’s not at the point where it’s abuse, but she should not own a cat. Just be careful please.
