I have a chance at interviewing for a promotion at my job. I qualify for the position, but I lack experience. I want to go for the promotion because it probably won’t be available again for a while. But if I go for it then I might not know what to do.

There’s real value to the application / interview process itself. And you are putting the word out that you are looking to grow and advance, which may mean you’re thought of for a future opportunity

If you’re only interviewing/applying, what do you have to lose? Even if you don’t get the job, the interview will prepare you for when you go for the job in the future, you’ll be in their radar, and you’d still be exactly where you first were. They’ll know if you’re the right candidate for the job, from the interview, and are probably assuming a learning curve. They’ll risk is so low and the reward so high (hopefully) that you should totally just go for it and let them decide if you’re good fit

It’s better to show confidence & initiative wanting a promotion and be turned away than do nothing and have to wait with no eyes on you for further opportunities, they’ll be more likely to consider you for promotions if you just try right now

If you don’t get it, you’ve shown initiative for putting yourself out there and applying, and that looks good to higher ups. You can also get feedback on what to do differently next time and brush up on your interview skills. Worst they say is no, which will be a bummer, but you’ll move on.
