Keeping Great Apes in cages/ zoos/ enclosures should be illegal. They’re literally 99.9% of our DNA. They are intelligent. They use tools and have complex social structures. You can literally teach them to speak sign language.

A strawberry has 98% of our dna and they are not intelligent. If we’re gonna make it illegal for gorillas it should be illegal for all animals

Illegal might be a bit much. A lot of zoos are rehabilitating them or helping them grow in population. I think zoos should have a lot stricter regulations and enclosure requirements tho

The ones in zoos shouldn’t be released, especially ones born there. That said none should be taken from the wild

There is a wide gulf of difference between the worst zoos and the best ones. I think great apes should have very strict regulations on what types of enclosures are suitable. You cannot ignore the vital conservation importance of both captive breeding and public outreach that zoos provide.

I feel similar with elephants. Maintaining a captive elephant population is important but I feel they should exclusively be kept in large reserve environments such as Tennessee Elephant Sanctuary
