the treaty of tordesillas was to settle the disputes between Spain and Portugal. In 1494 the treaty set a line of demarcation at 50 degrees west longitude. If you didn’t already know, the treaty gave Spain claim to the land west of the line, and Portugal to the east. This is (obviously) why Brazil speaks Portuguese and why Africa wasn’t colonized by Spain!
