Crna Gora* the name "Montenegro" is considered offensive

Crna Gora is the indigenous endonym meaning 'black mountain'. Montenegro is a Latinization/Gallicization

I see no evidence online that the people of Montenegro are offended by the exonym. We use exonyms all the time - the Germans don’t call themselves German, for example. I appreciate your intentions but I would appreciate more evidence for your claims

I use the indigenous names whenever I learn them for any place, anywhere, and fully support them being the exonyms as well, but I would like to know where you’re seeing that discussion.

I respect it! Personally, I’m equally happy to use exonyms or endonyms but it depends on the context and what allows me to most easily communicate with the people I’m talking to. Most people are going to understand exonyms better, so I most commonly use the exonym that the person is most likely to be familiar with.

I use endonyms until I’m asked to clarify, provide the exonym or colonial name for clarity, then go back to the endonym. Like with my current town, Gasgo’sagö:h (Rochester).

Cool, I don’t care. I’d rather respect the actual names of places. 😊

That literally isn’t the actual name of the place though

Except that it’s the name given by the indigenous, so, yeah, it is.

So people who were not the original inhabitants, conquered the land, and chose to sell it, named it that, but since they weren’t white they’re the “original people”. Everywhere belongs to the second to last people to own it.
