I always thought the argument of there being a downstate, midstate and upstate. That’s actually the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. NY is 3 sections, NYC, Long Island, And Upstate

yes i agree with those but some people including myself also wonder about westchester and a couple counties like that just north of the city if they are considered upstate bc they are NOT upstate vibes

Growing up I considered anything north of the Bronx upstate, but idk I do agree westhester isn’t really upstate so maybe north of that. Someone tried arguing Poughkeepsie is the start but idk that’s already up there for me

i’m from upstate new york, and the way we usually think of it is: near nyc but not is downstate, albany area is eastern, rochester and buffalo are western, watertown and like potsdam, anything up near canada is truly the “upstate”, and then like syracuse and utica would actually be considered central. im more from the central area but its easier to just say upstate because ppl not from here categorize it as just city and then everything else lol
