Should middle schoolers (age 11-14) be encouraged to join wrestling? This would mean they’re encouraged to drop weight classes and they may or may not have even gone through puberty

Encouraged to join sports is what I’d like to see.

I don’t think anyone should be encouraged to join any specific thing unless they have interest in it. Or if they have no interest in any of it then they should be encouraged to join something in general

I think age-appropriate wrestling (without pressure to change weight) should exist, just like age-appropriate football (with less intense contact) is a thing

There are three sports I’ll never let my kid play. Ballet, wrestling, and american football. The first two have an insane culture surrounding weight which inevitably leads to eating disorders and the last causes CTE.

NO. N. O. I’m a Nutrition and Dietetics major and weightloss at this age is not healthy unless the child is already obese. Even then, a weightloss of 1lb a month is the maximum recommendation. To put into their head that they need to lose weight so fast can be damaging to their body and mind.

People shouldnt be 'encouraged' to join anything they arent interested in themselves at any age tbh, wrestling, I dont think should be open to kids below high school, they can train and wrestle and stuff, and obviously that involves being weight classed but competitive weight classing and diet restriction specifically should not be allowed under 14-16 for any sport imo

I agree but with wrestling specifically it could set unhealthy expectations for weight and body image and you’re being compared to others when not everyone has gone through puberty yet and this age is already where a lot of eating disorders are diagnosed

I guess it depends. I’ve never once heard of people being encouraged to wrestle🤷‍♀️ if a kid is interested in wrestling let them do it.

Wrestling is a terrific sport to learn discipline and mental toughness. I wrestled since I was 8 all the way through high school and I am extremely glad I did it. I do not agree with any extreme weight cuts, ESPECIALLY pre-puberty but I think it would be extremely beneficial for middle schoolers to wrestle at whatever their current weight is.
