There is evidence that political discussion is widespread inside congregations, beyond formal endorsements. A Pew survey conducted in April 2026 found that 66% of Americans who attend religious services at least monthly said their clergy had recently spoken about at least one of several political/social issues. Among white evangelical Protestants, the figure was 85%. Immigration, abortion, Israel, homosexuality, transgender issues and U.S. military action were among the topics measured.
Trump administration has gone substantially further. In July 2025, the IRS told a federal court that communications from a house of worship to its congregation, including communications concerning electoral politics when viewed through religious faith, generally aren’t covered by the Johnson Amendment. Reuters reported that this interpretation could allow churches to endorse candidates to their own congregations without losing their tax-exempt status.
