typically just call it “the gulf” occasionally it’s gulf of mexico tho

It’s always been just the gulf for me. Called it that since I was a kid

It may take a while to catch on, I have a grandmother who still refers to Asia as "the orient" even though I've never heard anyone under 60 say that. I'd bet that the first generation to be told it's gulf of america in schools is going to be the first to actually call it that.
