Australia has freaking paid maternity leave for a YEAR is what I’ve heard. The dad also gets paid leave for a bit. Why can’t the US give mothers some slack

I never said they don’t get maternity leave, I said they do not get paid for maternity leave. There is no national law for paid maternity leave in the United States.
