If there’s a high or extreme heat advisory in your area PLEASE do not take your animals outside/on walks. PLEASE just wait until it’s closer to dusk and cooler out. Sincerely the LVT that had 3 heat stroke patients today alone

I don’t think enough people understand what heat stroke does to the body. Even if they survive they will have weeks of recovery. The high body temp legitimately starts to denature cells in the body including the lining of the stomach, causing GI issues and pain. It’s sincerely not worth it.

also lots of animals have higher body temps than humans so they burn up easier

I get heat exhaustion so easily bc of meds, so I’m usually the one dragging my dog inside when she wants to sunbathe on the hot driveway

Yes. 101.5 to 102.5°F is considered normal for cats and dogs. We have seen 106-110°F come in on emergency.

Like I can’t imagine how much worse it would feel if I was covered in fur

Totally understandable. I know some dogs also sunbathe when they have achy joints because the warmth helps soothe them. And if you supervised him and kept him hydrated it would be less likely, but still vulnerable.

Also lol I just thought this- the concrete will still be warm later in the evening!! Obviously you have the free will to just supervise and keep an eye on your dog’s health while he’s enjoying the sun, but it’s just *safer* to not do it at like 12-2pm when it’s the hottest part of the day. When I made this post it was cause I saw a couple walking their dog in extreme heat advisory at 1pm. Idek how they could deal w it themselves!

he gets absolutely no walks during the day promise (texas heat). he demands a sunset walk and uses his body weight to his advantage ahaha. if i’m lucky i can get his sunbathing time in prior to 11:30am though sometimes he sneaks more later

10/10 I love. I’m from SA originally and I’ve seen dogs melt their paws off on asphalt:/
