if you only want totodile you only have to check totodile

And I only have to save once right before I soft reset and not multiple times after then I’m done ?

yeah, save before you've ever looked at the machine and then reset from there

I saw some videos that said check all three pokeballs no matter which starter you are trying to soft reset for
