Ok I’d like to bring this discussion back because I feel like it left too fast: does anyone think that Taylor’s opalite has racist undertones, or is it just reaching?

As a poc, the song is metaphorically speaking of depression and happiness, it does not have racial undertones. One of the lyrics starts with, "that's when my mama told me" if it was a direct attack towards Kayla that makes no sense as to why her mom would say something. "Sleepless in the onyx night" = feeling stuck in depression, "now the sky is opalite" = a new beginning of happiness. Not to mention opalite has colors of blue, pink, yellow, and lavender, not just white

This conversation is so bizarre. The comparison of depression to a dark night has been done a million times in her songs but because Travis’s ex is black and nights are dark somehow it has racial undertones…? Like what?

I'm POC and I feel like it has racist undertones not because of the lyricism in the song, but because of the way she's treated POC (specifically WOC) in her life and to the media. If some random artist released it? Like this whole idea was started by a white “influencer” on TikTok who famously hates Taylor Swift and went viral for this video. This was not something made in good faith so it’s so strange that people are picking up this idea as if it was.

she is not an ally and she seems perfectly content with racists interpreting the songs in a racist or yt supremacy way since it doesn't hinder her sales. It's THAT part of it that brings racist undertones to the song
